Punjab Kings have been dealt a significant blow in their IPL 2025 campaign with fast bowler Lockie Ferguson expected to miss the remainder of the tournament due to injury. The New Zealand pacer limped off the field after delivering just two balls in the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad, clutching his left thigh, and now faces an extended period on the sidelines.
“Ferguson is out indefinitely, and the chances of having him back by the end of the tournament are very slim. It looks like a fairly serious injury,” confirmed Punjab Kings’ fast bowling coach James Hopes, speaking ahead of their upcoming clash with Kolkata Knight Riders in Mullanpur.
The 33-year-old has been an important cog in the PBKS bowling attack, especially during the middle overs. In his four appearances this season — including the game against SRH — Ferguson claimed five wickets and maintained pressure with his pace and variations.
Ferguson’s absence forces PBKS to explore alternative pace options within their squad. Australian quick Xavier Bartlett and Afghanistan all-rounder Azmatullah Omarzai are among the overseas choices. On the domestic front, Vijaykumar Vyshak, who impressed in PBKS’ season opener but hasn’t featured since, could be called upon again. Yash Thakur, who played against SRH, is another possible replacement.
This latest setback adds to a growing list of injury concerns for Ferguson. He missed the Champions Trophy earlier this year due to a hamstring issue picked up during the ILT20 and had previously struggled with a calf injury in late 2024.
For Punjab Kings, who currently sit mid-table with three wins and two losses from five matches, losing one of their key bowlers mid-season is far from ideal. The franchise will now need its bench strength to step up as they aim to build momentum in the weeks ahead.
