Wankhede Stadium Stand Named After Rohit Sharma, MCA Honors Mumbai Cricket Legends

In a landmark tribute to one of India’s modern-day cricketing greats, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) has announced the renaming of a stand at the iconic Wankhede Stadium after Team India captain Rohit Sharma. The decision was finalized during the MCA’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) held on Tuesday, April 15.

According to an official release, the Divecha Pavilion Level 3 will now be known as the Rohit Sharma Stand. The proposal, originally tabled by Milind Narvekar and seconded by Jitendra Awhad, was one of several passed during the meeting that aim to honor key figures in Mumbai’s cricketing legacy.

In addition to Sharma, two other prominent personalities were recognized with dedicated stands. The Grand Stand Level 3 has been renamed the Sharad Pawar Stand, in honor of the former MCA president and influential administrator. Meanwhile, Level 4 will now be known as the Ajit Wadekar Stand, commemorating the former India captain who played a pivotal role in shaping Indian cricket during the 1970s.

As part of its tributes, the MCA has also renamed the match-day office located within the MCA Pavilion. It will now be called the MCA Office Lounge, in memory of Amol Kale, the association’s former president who passed away during his tenure.

“The MCA remains dedicated to preserving the legacy of individuals who have made tremendous contributions to the sport, while continuing to pursue cricketing excellence,” the association said in its statement.

Another major development from the AGM was the approval to increase the financial corpus for affiliated clubs to ₹75 crores. There are also plans to raise this further to ₹100 crores in the near future, reflecting the MCA’s commitment to strengthening grassroots infrastructure and nurturing cricket talent across Mumbai.

“These decisions are a reflection of our reverence for the pillars of Mumbai cricket and our resolve to build a brighter future. The renamed stands and the new lounge will stand as lasting tributes to the legends who shaped the city’s cricketing soul — brick by brick, run by run,” said MCA president Ajinkya Naik.
